S/v Tantalus is a 1978 52’ Irwin staysail ketch, designed and built by Ted Irwin, Irwin Yachts USA. There were 250 of these various models built. This particular model is the State model and was built specifically for the Caribbean charter boat trade. Irwin built their yachts with fiberglass construction, no balsa cored decks. This vessel has a draft of 5’10” since the original centerboard was professionally taken out.
s/v Tantalus has been extensively making offshore passages. The current owners bought her in 2003 and sailed her from Houston, Tx, all over the Caribbean for years to make the Rio Dulce her final destination. Over the years there have been many important upgrades made: a new mast step was built and fitted and the support stringers were also re-enforced at the same time. The rudder was rebuilt with large stainless-steel plates encased and welded to the rudder post. The wooden toe rails on this vessel once leaked so they were replaced with a fiberglass plate all around the deck, so there are no more leaks. The original wooden hatches have been replaced with aluminum Lewmar hatches.
This 52’ Irwin is not only a proven seaworthy vessel, but also makes a comfortable liveaboard. She has 4 sleeping cabins and 2 heads. With 7ft headroom throughout and a 16ft beam, she provides plenty of space for everyone!
s/v Tantalus is powered by a rebuilt Perkins 4236 engine in good running condition and a fiberglass water trap was installed in the exhaust. All sails are in good condition; the main and mizzen are fully battened, and the headsail is 110%. The staysail is a hank on and there is a storm sail and a small spare sail.
This vessel is being sold with many spare parts including thousands of dollars worth of new ports supplied by New Found Metals in the USA for a new owner to install. For many years s/v Tantalus was taken on many exciting adventures, while providing her owners a safe, solid performance at sea.
With some TLC and labor s/v Tantalus will be ready to sail away. She will make someone an excellent cruising vessel!
